An imposing building with a capacity for 6000 people whose particular characteristics certify the important role played by Cartagena in the history of the Ancient Hispania.

The museum exhibits items discovered in excavations in the area of the Roman Theatre in Cartagena, built between the 5th and 1st centuries BC.

[acc_item title=”PUNIC WALLS“] The Centre of interpretation of the Punic Wall supposes the recovery of the remains of the ancient Carthaginian wall (III century B.C.) situated at the entrance of the city, and is one of the scarce punic findings located in the Iberian peninsula. The remains discovered are 30 metres long and some parts are conserved courses of blocks about 3 metres high.

Together with the wall one can visit the remains of a funeral crypt belonging to the hermitage of Saint Joseph, built during the XVI and XVII centuries.

[acc_item title=”ROMAN HOUSE “Fortuna”“] The House of Fortune contains the remains of a Roman dwelling brought to light in 2000. Its construction is dated from the end of the 1st century B.C. coinciding with an important urbanization process. The house occupied an area of 204 m2 and belonged to a wealthy family, since this kind of domus, one-family house, usually was the residence of the wealthy classes.

It offers a panoramic view of the domestic life of the Roman period through the different rooms that it is comprised of, such as the tablinum or the representation room, the cubicula or bedrooms, the triclinium where they celebrated the banquets and the atrium.

[acc_item title=”CATHEDRAL OF MURCIA“] The Cathedral of Murcia, created in 1394 on the site of a former mosque. It was bishop Fernando de Pedrosa who placed the cornerstone. The interior is Gothic. The façade is Baroque and was built according to design by Jaime Bort. It has a 95-metre tower that took more than two hundred years to build with the involvement of many different architects, of whom Ventura Rodríguez stands out especially. Los Vélez Chapel is Flamboyant Gothic and has a vaulted ceiling with star-shaped skylights, while Los Junterones Chapel is in Renaissance style.

[acc_item title=”FUENSANTA SANCTUARY“] Very close to Murcia is the sanctuary of “La Fuensanta” Sanctuary, the usual residence of the patron virgin of the city.

It is made up of a traditional Murcian Baroque temple, which has three naves: a large central nave and two side naves with chapels. Inside, there are some splendid reliefs and sculptures by Gonzalez Moreno. The paintings and murals of the dome and of the choir are the work of the painter Pedro Flores.

[acc_item title=”LIGHTHOUSE OF CABO DE PALOS“] The natural area and preserved area of Cabo de Palos is in La Manga del Mar Menor, just 30 kilometres from the town of Cartagena. The main attraction here, however, is in the sea itself. Hormiga Islands are 2.5 miles away from the coast. The sea bed has been designated an Integral Marine Reserve for its exceptional beauty and excellent state of conservation. Its lighthouse began operating on January 31, 1865.
